My life as a Chiropractor in sunny Perth, Western Australia

I have been a Chiropractic patient since I was about five years old. My mum attended and I was suffering hay fever so she took me in to have a check up and it helped me.  I’ve always held a philosophy of let the body heal itself and the Chiropractic approach makes sense. Keep the nervous system working and the body can function at its optimal capacity.

There are many techniques practiced and certain ones suit people better. I take a musculo-skeletal approach where I like to look at both what muscles may be tight and what bones may need aligning.  In addition I prefer low force techniques and find great results with practicing them. I’m lucky because I also live in one of the most beautiful places in world! Perth, Western Australia. We can exercise outdoors in every season and we have world class athletes in every sport.

I love what I do and I believe strongly in the unique services that I offer my patients.

Y Balance Test - measuring your ability

I hope you’ve been enjoying my weekly blogs! I’m a highly qualified Chiropractor and I’ve dabbled in teaching, but writing is something new to me and I am enjoying it so far because I get to write about something I’m passionate about - helping my patients, who often include professional athletes.

So - I offer my patients the Functional Movement Screen (risk assessment) and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (assessing one’s inability), now I would like to talk about the Y Balance Test. Think of this test as measuring ones ability. Hopefully you start to get a picture of how I treat my patients and see what sets me apart from other Chiropractors.

The Y Balance Test is a very well researched method to test someone’s motor control and demonstrate functional symmetry. I use it to separate the body into quarters and test core and extremity function under bodyweight loads. It fits in with the performance model and works well in assessing teams and comparing its players to one another.

Using Move to Perform software I can compare your athletes and teams against a database of others in the same sport and see how performance ranking fits. I think that’s incredibly exciting and I am always on the look-out for elite teams that want to work with me to achieve ultimate performance and results.

The SFMA - an assessment of one's inability

Last week I blogged about the Functional Movement Screen. I’m certified in both the screen, and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment. I offer both services at my Chiropractic clinic in Hillarys, WA. As a Chiropractor I see many people with pain, and because I want to help them with drug free treatments, the SMFA is relevant to their direct treatment every day.
Remembering that the screen is like a risk assessment, think of SFMA as assessing one’s inability.
These SFMA tests are a series of top-tier tests that then break out into other tests, used to separate pain and dysfunction. So they are very thorough and I believe the results are invaluable.

At my Chiropractic clinic I use the results to diagnose whether exercise is indicated or not.. Once a diagnosis is made I can recommend the best rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise to my patient, and work with them towards a common goal - pain relief without the need for drugs or surgery.

My thoughts on the Functional Movement Screen

I’m a keen advocate for the Functional Movement Screen which is why I offer it to my patients at my Chiropractic clinic on the northern coast of Perth, Western Australia. I use the screen to test your mobility and stability. It helps me to determine your greatest areas of movement deficiency, and demonstrate limitations or asymmetries.

It’s basically a risk assessment - I want to help everyday people prevent injury, and give fitness professionals a non-invasive and drug free way to achieve optimal performance. The Functional Movement Screen allows me to find movement patterns that I can help you to correct.

I really hope you book a screen with me, as I love meeting new clients and helping them exercise, train, and perform everyday activities in the best way possible.

Guest Lecturer at Murdoch University

Recently I was invited to be a Guest Lecturer to Murdoch University 4th Year Chiropractic students, to introduce Functional Movement Screening.

This has been a real highlight of my career as a Chiropractor in Perth. I was able to utilise my Certification in Functional Movement Screening and ignite within the students that passion I have for injury prevention and. I enjoyed the change from my Perth Chiropractic Clinic, to University Lecturer!

It was not my first time having a go at teaching. Five years ago I also supervised in the Student Clinic, assisting the students with Case Management and treatment of patients.

The students at Murdoch are currently working on a rehabilitation project where they have to assess and write up a report on their patient. Understanding the Movement Screen would assist them with understanding their findings during their examination. The class was actively involved in my presentation, and I fielded many questions around private practice, certifications, and the benefit of moving well and moving often.
